Gordon to celebrate new class of Year Up Los Angeles graduates at ceremony on August 6th

Continuing to expand its proven workforce development program for young adults, the nonprofit Year Up announced today that it has appointed Tamyra (Tammy) Gordon as Executive Director of Year Up Los Angeles (YULA). She will celebrate the graduation of YULA Class Five on August 6th at the Fine Arts Theatre of West Los Angeles College in Culver City.

With over a decade of experience in the corporate, education and nonprofit sectors, Gordon most recently served as YULA’s Site Director before transitioning to Interim Executive Director in Fall of 2018. She will focus on continuing to achieve superior outcomes for Year Up students in Los Angeles, where 80% of graduates are employed and/or continue their postsecondary education within four months of completing the program, earning an average wage of $21 per hour.

Year Up is a national workforce development program that provides young adults with free in-demand technical and professional skills training, followed by an internship at a top local company. Students earn college credits and weekly stipends throughout the yearlong program.

“Tammy brings a wealth of experience from her previous roles at Year Up, where she built strong partnerships with donors and college partners,” said Dwight Powery, Western Region National Site Director at Year Up. “She is now working to establish relationships with new college partners, and will help us scale Year Up’s impact across the region to reach even more young adults in need of an opportunity—and more organizations in need of their talent.”

Prior to Year Up, Gordon served in a variety of educational roles, including as a teacher at First Ave Elementary School in Newark, NJ and as the launch lead for California expansion of America Needs You through a partnership with the Los Angeles-based Ric & Suzanne Kayne Foundation.

“I’m excited to continue leading Year Up Los Angeles as we work to close the Opportunity Divide in our city by providing talented, motivated young people with the skills, experience and support they need to launch their professional careers,” said Gordon.

Year Up Los Angeles has served more than 320 young adults since launching at West Los Angeles College in Fall of 2016, connecting them with meaningful-wage careers in business and IT. Students gain in-demand technical and professional skills in the first semester, then participate in a semester-long internship at one of twenty top local businesses in areas such as IT, Help desk, Client Services, Financial Operations and Project Management Support. Eighty-five percent of YULA graduates choose to continue their education at West Los Angeles College, and can access certificate pathways while in the program.

Last year, a federally-sponsored evaluation of Year Up showed a 53% increase in initial earnings for young adults randomly assigned to Year Up compared with similar young adults in a control group—the largest impacts on earnings reported to date for a workforce program tested in a randomized controlled trial.
