The investment from MRHT will prepare talented and motivated young adults in Chicago for healthcare business careers
July 28, 2018
Continuing its mission to close the gap between available middle-skills jobs and the tens of thousands of young adults in Chicago in need of an opportunity, the nonprofit Year Up Chicago announced today that Michael Reese Health Trust (MRHT) will invest $40,000 in its workforce development program for healthcare operations. The investment is MRHT’s first investments received by Year Up specifically targeting healthcare operations.
“Michael Reese Health Trust is committed to supporting the creation of pathways for young adults in Chicago that provide economic mobility through healthcare employment,” said Gayla Brockman, President and CEO of MRHT. “We are keenly aware that there is a divide between young adults who want to work and employers who are in need of their talent. The healthcare sector offers meaningful career paths in IT, Financial Operations, Customer Service, and Business Operations be it hospitals, health systems, universities, or other healthcare institutions. We are excited to partner with Year Up Chicago to help create a bridge into this growing industry.”
Year Up Chicago provides free job training to talented and motivated youth, ages 18-24, without college degrees at campuses in downtown Chicago and at Harold Washington College. Students gain in-demand technical and professional skills in the first six months, then participate in a six-month internship at a top local company. Last month, the federally-sponsored Pathways for Advancing Careers and Education (PACE) evaluation of Year Up showed a 53% increase in initial earnings for young adults randomly assigned to Year Up compared with similar young adults in a control group—the largest impacts on earnings reported to date for a workforce program tested in a randomized controlled trial.
“This investment from Michael Reese Health Trust will allow Year Up Chicago to recruit young adults interested in a healthcare business career and create a tailored ‘boot camp’ to prepare them for internships at organizations like Rush University Medical Center and Northwestern University School of Feinberg Medicine,” said Jack Crowe, Year Up Chicago Executive Director. “MRHT’s support will also provide significant exposure for us in the healthcare sector, leading to more corporate partners and more internship opportunities for our young adults.”
Since 2010, Year Up Chicago has provided more than 1,200 young adults with in-demand skills, creating a pipeline of diverse, motivated talent for more than 35 of Chicago’s leading businesses in areas such as IT, Client Services, Financial Operations and Project Management Support. Year Up Chicago now serves more than 280 young adults each year, with 90 percent of graduates employed or attending college full-time within four months of completing the program, earning average starting salaries of $36,000/year.
