Business Leaders Join Former Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton to Announce CGI Commitments to Action to Expand Career Pathways for Young People

June 24, 2014 / Boston — Recognizing Year Up’s leadership in connecting young adults with meaningful careers, leaders from MDC Partners, Microsoft, and Symantec are partnering with Year Up to make Clinton Global Initiative (CGI) Commitments to Action at the CGI America.

At the 2014 CGI America meeting, Former Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton announced Job One, a major set of commitments focused on improving job pathways for youth in the United States. Ten leading companies — including four Year Up partners — joined Secretary Clinton on stage during the plenary “Charting a New Course: Education and Employing America’s Future Leaders” to share their commitments to expand pathways to work for young people.

“One of the most terrifying statistics is that nearly six million young Americans between the ages of 16 and 24 are out of school and out of work,” said Secretary Clinton, citing economists’ predictions that “the youth unemployment crisis could cost our country more than $20 billion in lost earnings over the next decade alone.”

Secretary Clinton is prioritizing youth employment as one of the key issues for her work at the Clinton Foundation, and believes that business-led initiatives will play a critical role in addressing this important economic challenge. The Clinton Foundation is working closely with businesses and leading nonprofits, economists, and advocates across the country to identify and scale effective ways for companies to address their core business needs through engaging our nation’s opportunity youth.

“These ten leading companies are exemplary for their commitment to create employment pathways for ‘Opportunity Youth’ and for recognizing the value that these motivated, talented individuals bring to their organizations,” said Year Up Founder and CEO Gerald Chertavian. “Year Up is honored to be a key partner in four of these initiatives.”

Lauded by President Barack Obama for its proven track record of success, Year Up is a national nonprofit job training program that provides young adults with six months of technical and professional skills training followed by a six-month internship at companies like Microsoft and Eighty-five percent of Year Up’s alumni are employed and/or attending college full-time within four months of completing the program. The commitments announced at CGI America will allow Year Up to scale its existing programs and extend into new areas of technical training.

Symantec, an information protection expert, announced the Symantec Cyber Career Connection, a pilot program designed to train opportunity youth for jobs in cyber security. The pilot will be implemented through a network of partners, including Year Up at its sites in Baltimore and the Bay Area. “Symantec is committed to making it possible for people to enjoy the full benefits of the connected world while helping resolve a profound social issue of under-employment,” said Aled Miles, Senior Vice President, The Latin American Geography & Global Strategic Accounts, Symantec. “Our heritage as a leader in cybersecurity makes addressing this issue a natural fit, but we couldn’t do it alone. Much of the success of this program will be through our partnerships with leading educational and workforce development nonprofits Year Up and NPower, and we’re excited to work together to build these skills to protect the future.”

MDC Partners, a global advertising and marketing services network, committed to hosting 25 Year Up interns with plans to develop a Year Up talent pipeline. “At MDC Partners we believe that great talent fuels innovation and drives success” said Miles Nadal, Chairman and CEO of MDC Partners. “By partnering with Year Up, and formalizing our Commitment with Clinton Global Initiative, we will empower young people with the means and opportunity to elevate themselves and achieve their full potential. In doing so, we aim to inspire the next generation of leaders, while helping to improve families, communities and our entire workforce.”

Microsoft and are longtime Year Up partners, and announced plans to increase their support for Opportunity Youth. For Microsoft, this includes working with Year Up Puget Sound to develop a pathway for Year Up graduates to serve as customer service advisors in its retail stores, and to host more Year Up interns at its corporate headquarters. “IT internships can be a great entrée to an exciting career in the growing tech field, and Microsoft is very pleased to offer this opportunity to more young people in the U.S. through our YouthSpark initiative and the Year Up organization,” said Lori Forte Harnick, General Manager, Citizenship and Public Affairs, Microsoft.

The Foundation announced a multi-year commitment to numerous educational initiatives around Technology, and committed to hosting more Year Up interns and hiring more Year Up graduates. “We’ve been a partner with Year Up since they arrived in the San Francisco Bay Area in 2008 and are excited to continue to grow our partnership,” said Foundation President Suzanne DiBianca. “Year Up has a proven model of preparing youth for careers in technology through intensive career-readiness training and hands-on work experience. has hosted more than one hundred interns to date and we look forward to doubling that number over the next three years.”
