Jessica Vasquez, a community liaison at Dade County Federal Credit Union, was recently presented with the Volunteer Impact Award by Year Up South Florida. Launched in 2012 on the campus of Miami Dade College, Year Up South Florida offers an intensive, one-year program for college students, ages 18-24, combining professional coaching, hands-on skill development, and internships at some of America’s top companies. Vasquez led several financial literacy workshops for Year Up interns and is a dedicated volunteer.
Vasquez has been volunteering with Year Up since 2019 and has worked with young professionals who have begun working, through Year Up, with top-tier companies like Amazon, Bank of America and GE.
“I worked with Year Up students who were earning some of their first paychecks and have an immediate need to open accounts and start managing their money,” said Vasquez. “It’s been amazing because they are very intelligent and want to learn to manage their money, build their credit and understand their finances.”
In her position as community liaison, Vasquez organizes dozens of financial literacy events for Dade County Federal each year.
“Part of our core mission at Dade County Federal is to educate young people and improve our community,” said Dade County Federal CEO George Joseph. “We are proud of Jessica, as she has shown a tremendous commitment to promoting financial literacy while at work and in her volunteer efforts.”
As students work toward completing a degree at Miami Dade College, Year Up South Florida provides them with professional development and work experience, preparing graduates to launch a meaningful career.
“The partnership with Dade County Federal Credit Union has helped our students understand the value of financial literacy as they embark on their careers through Year Up,” said John-Marra Youte, interim site director for Year Up. “Jessica’s unwavering support is a perfect example of how volunteer partners can close the economic divide in our community. We are grateful for her and all of DCFCU’s Gen-You volunteers, and look forward to empowering many more young adults through this collaboration.”
Year Up is an award-winning, national 501(c)3 organization that enables motivated young adults ages 18-24 to move from minimum wage to meaningful careers in just one year by providing the skills, experience, and support they need to reach their full potential. Year Up has served more than 26,000 young adults since its founding in 2000 and serves more than 4,700 young adults annually across 26 U.S. cities.
