Michael McKenzie

Michael McKenzie is a Partner at Grain Management, LLC, a private equity firm focused on investments in the media and communications sectors. At Grain, Mr. McKenzie is responsible for guiding overall firm strategy and sourcing new investment opportunities. Prior to joining Grain, Mr. McKenzie held top positions at the U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC), including Deputy Chief of the FCC’s Wireless Bureau and Senior Advisor for New Technology. In these roles, Mr. McKenzie helped to shape U.S. communications policy. Before joining the FCC, Mr. McKenzie held senior-level positions in the technology industry. He served as a General Manager at Microsoft Corp., where he supported the company’s worldwide enterprise services. Prior to that, he served as Senior Director of Business Development & Strategy in Microsoft’s platforms and services division. Mr. McKenzie also practiced technology and communications law at leading Silicon Valley and Washington D.C. law firms. He graduated Phi Beta Kappa from the University of Virginia, and received his J.D. degree from Harvard Law School.


Mr. McKenzie serves on the board of the University of Virginia’s Batten School of Leadership & Public Policy and Year Up National Capital Region.  He lives in Arlington, VA with his wife and two sons.
