Year
Up's Providence site opened its doors in January of 2005.
We are proud to be Year Up's first expansion outside of the
Boston area and are committed to serving this community's
urban young adults. We are humbled by the tremendous support
that we have received in our first two years here and look
forward to continuing to work with Providence's many talented
young people.

On January 25th, 2008, Year Up Providence graduated its fifth class of students at the Westin Providence. The graduation ceremony featured a keynote address by Colonel Dean Esserman, Chief of Providence Police. Teny Gross of the Institute for the Study & Practice of Nonviolence received Year Up's Urban Empowerment Award. Platinum sponsors of the event were Bank of America, Microsoft, Citizens Bank and Stop & Shop. Gilbane supported the event as a Gold Sponsor and table sponsors included Bank Rhode Island, Collette Vacations, FGX International, GTECH, Hayes & Sherry, and Textron.
Twenty-two students between ages 18 and 24 graduated from the one-year program this year. Graduates Derek Amado and Judy Kong provided reflections and inspiration during the ceremony.

Year
Up Providence welcomes its seventh class of students
We just welcomed the 7th class of students in January, while our 6th class of students began their apprenticeships at some of Providence’s leading companies including CVS/pharmacy, Citizens Bank and Fidelity Investments.
We are currently looking to secure additional corporate and
community partners. If you are interested in participating

WHO WE SERVE
Year Up serves high school graduates and GED recipients ages
18 to 24 years old from the Greater Providence area. Currently
we have students from Providence, East Providence, Cranston,
Pawtucket, Central Falls, Warwick, Woonsocket and Attleboro,
MA.

Sara Strammiello
Enright
Executive Director
Sara joined Year Up full time in 2004 after volunteering and
working part-time with us for two years as she completed graduate
school. She comes to Year Up with a mix of IT, business and
economic development experience. Most recently, Sara was at
the Initiative for a Competitive Inner City (ICIC), a nonprofit
research and consulting firm focused on urban economic development.
At ICIC she led a research project examining the workforce practices
of leading inner city businesses. Prior to ICIC, Sara held business
development and strategy positions at AltaVista. Prior to AltaVista,
Sara was a management consultant with Deloitte Consulting where
she participated in software implementations and operations
consulting. Sara also has extensive experience working with
urban youth and young adults through the Boys & Girls Club,
Tutoring Plus and the Deloitte Youth Scholar Program. Sara has
a B.A. in Chemistry from Dartmouth College and an M.B.A from
Harvard Business School.

Rosamaria Amoros
Director, Outreach & Admissions
Rose joined Year Up full time in 2008 after serving as a program mentor the year prior. She brings to Year Up extensive experience in marketing communication, journalism and community activism and a fervid commitment to empowering young adults in her home state of Rhode Island. A native of the south side of Providence, Rose began her career working for the Rhode Island Public Transit Authority in constituency relations. She later worked as a freelance reporter for the Associated Press – Providence bureau and as a studio publicity associate for NBC Universal in Burbank, California. Returning to Rhode Island, she served as an account executive for Duffy & Shanley, a well-known communications firm in Providence. There she developed and executed comprehensive communications programs for diverse clients – from global consumer brands to regional coalitions. Most recently, Rose served as an account supervisor for Boston-based Greenough Communications where she led account teams in the technology, corporate, public policy and non-profit practice areas and oversaw the agency’s professional development and internship programs. In her personal time, Rose is a member of the Rhode Island Young Professionals, spearheading the organization’s community outreach efforts, and is on the board of several community-based organizations serving the state’s urban youth. Rose graduated Summa Cum Laude from Providence College, earning her B.S. in Organizational Communications. She is now a graduate student at Simmons College.

JAMES ANGEL
Jr. Technical Instructor
James Angell graduated from Year Up's Providence Class of July 2006. As a student, he completed his apprenticeship at GTECH as a Deskside Support Technician assisting clients with technical issues on a daily basis as well as taking on many different technical projects. After graduating from Year Up, James worked at CVS as a Desktop Support Technician for ten months, working on several projects including POS touch screen installations, POS controller upgrades, and a major merger integration project. James recently joined Year Up's Providence Team as a Junior IT Instructor and is currently taking classes at CCRI in pursuit of a BS in computer science.

Laura Brown
Office Manager
Laura comes to Year Up with 10+ years in the academic environment. She has spent with six of those years as the Administrative Coordinator for the TIMSS & PIRLS International Study Center, a grant-funded educational research group housed within the Lynch School of Education, at Boston College. Originally from New York City, Laura spent her childhood living in Puerto Rico, New York, and Texas. A graduate of Boston College with a Bachelor’s in English, Laura has resided in New England for the past 14 years.

Andrea Carvalho
Professional Writing/Communication Instructor
Andrea comes to Year Up with more than five years of experience
as an educator. She has extensive experience as an Adult
ESOL instructor, youth organizer, and facilitator of popular
education workshops. Andrea is originally from Cape Verde,
and is fluent in four languages. She graduated with honors
from Brown University where she developed her philosophy
of teaching. She is a strong advocate of the Freirean approach
to teaching and brings this to the Year Up classroom to challenge
and empower the students. She advanced from the part time
Writing Instructor to the lead Writing Instructor in six
months’ time, indicating her commitment to the students
and team here in Providence.

Richard
Dubuisson
Director of Academic Services
Richard was the first Instructor hired at Year Up in Boston
in 2001. After helping to create the original Year Up program
there, he and his family moved to Providence in ’04,
to be a part of the start-up team, Richard comes to Year
Up with a unique combination of teaching and training experience
and a passion for working with young adults. Prior to Year
Up, he was a lead software trainer for Gateway, and before
that, he developed and taught academic as well as technical
curricula for A.B.C.D. Even Start, a high school diploma
program serving adults in Boston's urban neighborhoods. Richard
also taught Mathematics at Archishop Curley-Notre Dame High
School, an urban Catholic High School in Miami, Florida.
Richard graduated with a B.A. in History and French from
Duke University.

Kristin
Easton
Director of Apprenticeships and Alumni
Kristin comes to YearUp with 7+ years in both the
education and business fields. Kristin graduated from Syracuse
University with a degree in Sociology and Education. Kristin
began her career as a classroom teacher based in Westchester,
NY. She traveled to San Francisco to further develop her
business skills, working as the Learning Development Specialist
for the San Francisco Chronicle. After returning to her home
town, Kristin worked in a training capacity for AIG on Wall
Street for 4 years, and brings with her extensive knowledge
of adult teaching techniques and corporate training modules.
Most recently she was the Director for the Huntington Learning
Center where she enabled families to help get their children
the best education possible through private tutoring, focusing
primarily on reading and math skills. Kristin is excited
to join the YearUp staff and is eager to start making a difference.

Joseph
Gerena
Director of Apprenticeships and Operations
Joseph joins Year Up with a unique set of experiences
in the non-profit and private sectors. Joseph began his career
in the documentary film industry, working for the Emmy Award
winning film company Blackside, as a project coordinator
on
the "Breakthrough" series. While at Blackside, Joseph
volunteered as a teen minister with Boston area youth. This
experience was so rewarding that Joseph continued this work
as a campus minister at the Berklee College of Music. After
the ministry, Joseph began working in the organ procurement
field with the New England Organ Bank as the Latino Community
Education Outreach Coordinator. He subsequently traded in
the winters of New England, for an opportunity to enjoy the
blistering summers in Birmingham, AL as a liaison between
Birmingham area hospitals and the Alabama Organ Center. In
this position, Joseph developed systems and processes for
improvement in several Birmingham hospitals. Joseph has a
B.S. in Communications from Boston University.

Misty Wilson
Part Time Writing Instructor
Misty Wilson, a native of Providence, Rhode Island and a student of Brown University, comes to Year Up with nine years of experience working within youth-based non-profit organizations. Her experience ranges from instructing and working one-on-one with youth in both creative writing and academic settings, to actually initiating and developing youth and community based organizations. As a student, Misty co-founded a locally well-known, youth empowerment organization called Youth In Action. She brings to the Year Up classroom the idea that within them, students already hold the power to achieve success and it’s just a matter of access. Her role is to merely provide assistance in accessing that power.
