CONGRATULATIONS CLASS OF August 2009
Year Up, Providence, is proud to announce the graduation of its 8th class of students. On August 3, 2009, over 200 friends and family members, corporate partners, and community leaders gathered at the Weston Hotel to commemorate the achievements of twenty-six Year Up graduates. Providence Mayor David Cicilline greeted the graduates, and we were honored to have U.S. Senator Jack Reed deliver a keynote address emphasizing the importance of the Year Up to both its students and the state.
The event offered the chance to celebrate both what the students have achieved and the opportunities that await them. Graduates Ryan Mellor and Angelica Rivera both spoke on their journeys through Year Up and the program's influence in helping them to transform their lives. Ryan related how he discovered his potential and his love of his job at Atrion, while Angelica shared her perspectives on the challenges of the program and her experiences at GTECH. Graduate Wesley Bair offered closing remarks on how the program has changed his outlook on both his professional and personal life and the excitement of new opportunities. Dwayne Archibald was presented with the Leadership Award, and Edward James won the Excellence Award.
Microsoft was the event's Platinum Sponsor, and it was underwritten by the Citizen's Bank Foundation. Gold Sponsors included Hasbro, Bank of America, CVS/pharmacy, and Delta Dental. There were also several table sponsors: Bank Rhode Island, GTECH, Hayes & Sherry Real Estate Services, and Marc Allen Fine Clothiers.
GTECH received the Outstanding Corporate Partner Award in recognition of their continued support of the program and its current students and alumni. Chuck LoCurto, EVP and CIO, Textron Financial Corporation, received the Outstanding Mentor Award, which recognizes a community member who has been instrumental in the personal and professional development of Year Up students.

OUR TEAM, providence
Meghan Hughes
Executive Director
Meghan joined the Providence Team as its Executive Director in August of 2009. Meghan’s commitment to public service is exemplified by her work in urban neighborhoods in New Haven in the mid-eighties, where she directed the Yale/New Haven tutoring program and worked as a counselor with the Coordinating Committee for Children in Crisis, a private non-profit based in that city. In the late eighties, Meghan was the co-director of the Brownstone School in the Bronx, a non-profit education program for homeless children, and she spent the next decade volunteering with her husband as a fundraiser and an advocate for the Boy Scouts of New York, most particularly as a mentor for two brothers in Harlem. Meghan moved with her family to Providence in 1999, and her community work there has included extensive gun control efforts, and volunteering for several political campaigns.
Meghan spent the last fifteen years in university academia, most recently at Tufts University where she taught Renaissance art history for the last six years. While there Meghan was proud to receive the school’s Excellence in Teaching Award and to contribute to new curriculum development and a partnership with Northeastern University. Prior to her academic career, Meghan was an assistant vice president for four years at Christie’s Auction house where she headed the American Folk Art department. Meghan currently serves on the Board of the RISD Museum of Art, heading the education committee, and has been active at her children’s schools with strategic planning and diversity work. She was raised in Indianapolis and is the proud graduate of its public school system. Meghan graduated magna cum laude from Yale and holds a PhD from New York University. Meghan and her husband Kimball have three children, Walker, Veta, and Jamey.
