Year Up NYC welcomed its first class of students in September, 2006; Located across the street from the New York Stock Exchange in the heart of New York City’s financial district, the site serves urban young adults from across the five boroughs.

Kenneth Austin
Executive Director
Kenneth Austin is the Executive Director of Year Up New York. He served for many years as a senior leader of non-profit organizations, including a national membership organization comprised of colleges and universities and a national philanthropic organization based in New York. Kenneth was a founding member of govWorks, Inc., a $60 million electronic government services and Internet provider, where he served on the board of directors, and as Director of Business Development, Corporate Secretary, Treasurer and Chief Legal Officer. His earliest work was as an Honors Attorney with the United States Department of the Treasury and he was also a corporate attorney with Davis Polk & Wardwell. He is a graduate of Harvard College and The Yale Law School.

monika ahluwalia
Lead Instructor, Information Technology
Before teaching at Year Up, Monika worked as a full time Computer Science Lecturer for Maharaja Surajmal Institute of Technology (MSIT) affiliated to Indraprastha University, New Delhi, India where she delivered lectures to junior and senior year students of Bachelors of Technology (B.Tech) in Computer Science and Information Technology in subjects like Software Engineering, Interface Programming and Operating Systems. In 2004, she also led work on designing and evaluating innovative user interfaces using HTML and WIN32API on Visual Studio and was appointed as a University Student's exam evaluator for the subject of Software Engineering. Prior to that, she worked as a full time Project Trainee in Standardization, Testing, Quality Assurance Directorate, (STQC), a Ministry of Information Technology, Delhi Government organization in India. She holds a Bachelors of Engineering with Honors degree in Computer Science from RGPV, India and a Masters of Technology (Silver Medalist) in Computer Science from Banasthali Vidyapith, India.

Vanessa Bennett
Admissions and Community Partners Manager
Vanessa Bennett joins Year Up as the Admission and Community Partners Manager. Vanessa was born in Belize City; she moved to Harlem New York when she was seven years old. She has over ten years experience in the non-profit field of youth and community development. Prior to joining Year Up Vanessa was the 21st Century TASC Director at Directions For Our Youth Inc., where she supervised three different afterschool programs providing a variety of services to over 500 young people. Vanessa Bennett graduated with Honors Delta mu Delta holding a Master of Business degree in Organization Leadership from Mercy College and a Bachelor of Science degree in Behavior Science specialization in Community Health. She is grateful to have such an amazing chance to work for an organization closing the opportunity divide. back to top
Melissa Cantave
Academic Manager
Melissa joins Year Up with over 10 years of experience in the field of education. Before joining Year Up, Melissa was part of the founding team, as Manager of Operations at La Cima Charter School located in Brooklyn, NY. As the Manager of Operations, she was responsible for supporting and implementing systems for student enrollment, transportation, meals and technology. Prior to La Cima Charter School, she worked for The Princeton Review as a Director of Development. In this role she was responsible for developing after school tutoring programs in various school sites throughout New York City. Melissa earned a BA in Psychology from Loyola University, New Orleans, and an MS in Industrial Organizational Development Psychology from Carlos Albizu University, Miami, FL.

Stokes Carrigan IV
Grants and Policy Coordinator
Prior to joining the Year Up New York staff, Stokes worked as a research assistant for the Center for Education Reform, a non-profit advocacy group, located in Washington DC. He spent time living in Australia, where he worked on, and trained to manage, a family cattle station in rural Queensland. He also managed a Junior Sailing Program in New Jersey, where he worked during the summer from 2001 to 2009. Stokes is a recent graduate of Wake Forest University, where he double majored in Philosophy and Psychology. There he received Honors in Philosophy for his thesis on the metaphysics of moral obligation.

Leah Clarke
Admissions and Database Coordinator
Leah grew up in Brooklyn, NY by way of Guyana, SA. She graduated from Georgian Court University with a dual degree in Business and Communications and has just completed her MS degree at Mercy College in Organizational Leadership. She has interned for Penguin USA as an Inroads intern and Planned Television Arts, a division of Ruder Finn. She most recently served as Director of Admissions and Public Relations at Catherine McAuley High School, an all girls high school located in Brooklyn, NY. She excited to be a part of the Year Up team and hopes she can be a great contributor to the students, staff, and mission of the organization.

Matthew B. Cronkite
Volunteer Coordinator
Prior to joining Year Up, Matt served for two years in AmeriCorps programs. During his first year in New York City, he worked in an elementary school in the South Bronx where his team ran an after-school program and provided tutoring for second through fifth grade students. His second year was spent at Year Up, helping to develop their ability to maximize volunteer engagement. Matt graduated from McGill University with a major in Art History and a minor in Atmospheric and Oceanic Science.

Stephanie Cuadrado
Internship Coordinator
Stefanie Cuadrado is a graduate of Year Up NY Class 2. During Year Up, Stefanie interned at American Express with the Desktop Support Team, and was offered a full-time position as a Technical Assistant/Team Coordinator when her internship ended. While working full-time at American Express, Stefanie continues her evening studies with Berkeley College and is pursuing a Bachelor’s in Administration degree with a major in Management. As an alumna, Stefanie believes her accomplishments will allow her to guide and mentor Year Up students. Stefanie is passionate about Year Up’s values and mission and is looking forward to helping young adults advance in their professional careers and pursue higher education.

Crystal Fields-Sam
Director of Corporate Engagement, Internships, and Alumni
Crystal comes to Year Up from Citi Market and Banking where she spent 8 years on the sales side for institutional fixed income, global fixed income and fixed income, currency and commodity structured products. She will bring her sales, relationship and analytical experiences to help "put Year Up out of business." Crystal is a graduate of Hampton University and was in the U.S. Navy for 4 years where she was stationed in D.C., Greece, Italy and Israel. She is also a board member of New Perspectives Theater Board Member and a marathoner -- and is a big fan of performing arts, architecture and food and wine.

Fleshman
Director of Policy and Grants Management
Karen joins Year Up from the Department of Youth and Community Development, where she specialized in youth workforce development. She served DYCD as Assistant General Counsel, Director of Internal Review, and Director of Special Projects. Karen started up and implemented many high-profile initiatives, including NY GirlsREACH, a gender-specific corporate sector internship program for high school juniors from areas of need, and Citizenship NY, a service that assisted 50,000 New Yorkers to apply for US Citizenship. She is a graduate of Mount Holyoke College (B.A., Latin American Studies), the University of Texas (M.A., Radio-TV-Film), and New York Law School (J.D., cum laude), and is admitted to practice law in New York. Karen serves on the boards of the Mariachi Academy of New York and the Luz C. Colon Memorial Fund.

Andres Gomez
Associate Director of Student Services
Andres joined Year-Up New York in partnership with Community Service Society of New York as part of a new Pilot Program designed to give wrap-around advocacy and support services to Year Up NY's students. Andres has transitioned to be Year Up NY’s Sutdent Services Manager. A Queens resident, Andres comes to Year Up NY with 3 years of experience in foster care. Within the foster care system, Andres has worked as a caseworker, home finder, and Education/Vocation Coordinator for the Youth Development Program. As an undergraduate at Stony Brook University, Andres majored in Sociology and Minored in Child & Family Studies. Andres received his MSW from Stony Brook University.

Linzey Jones
Site Leader
Linzey joined the Year Up NY team as the Admissions and Database coordinator in the Outreach and Student Services Department and currently transitioned to Site Leader. Prior to Year Up, Linzey worked in Wireless Generation as a Customer Data Representative. In the Customer Data department his responsibilities ranged from the role of system matter expert on various databases, working as a liaison with the IT department, and assisting customers in all data-related matters. In addition, Linzey is a professional Director and Vocalist. Linzey earned his Bachelor of Music from Manhattan School of Music for classical voice in 2005. He is thankful for the opportunity to be a part of the empowerment and mission that Year Up provides for its young adults. back to top
Johanna Meadows
Director, Donor Engagement and Events
Johanna had joined Year Up as Cultivation Manager, working with individual, corporate donors and planning events and has transitioned to Director of Donor Engagement and Events. Prior to joining Year Up NY she served as the Operations and Administrative Team Manager of Trafelet Delta Funds, an asset management firm based in New York City with over $1bn in assets. Her responsibilities included overseeing and maintaining the research subscriber/vendor budgets for US Funds, serving as signatory for all investor redemptions, research, and business expenses, and collaborating with departmental heads on various internal and external operational projects. Johanna was also a founding member of the first Philanthropy Committee at Trafelet. Prior to Trafelet, Johanna worked in education, at both First Friends Pre-School in Manhattan and Kaplan K12 Learning Services. At Kaplan, Johanna worked closely with principals, teachers and coaches at over 100 public elementary, middle and high schools throughout the five boroughs to implement skills building programs for students taking City and State mandatory tests. She also managed the 50-person trainer team and taught after-school supplementary education classes to 6th and 7th graders. Born and raised in New York City, Johanna received a BA in History from the University of Pennsylvania followed by working and traveling for one year in Australia and New Zealand.

Diana Miranda
Partner Relations Manager
Diana joined the NY Year Up team as Outreach & Student Services Manager and has transitioned to be NY’s Partner Relations Manager. Diana holds a BA from SUNY Oswego in Psychology and Spanish and an MBA from the University of Phoenix. Before working at Year Up, Diana was Office Manager at HSM Americas, Inc; a company that held management training conferences for Corporate America. Diana spent three years at Edwin Gould Foundation as Project/Office Assistant to the President. Diana taught middle school in New York City for four years. She was also a caseworker for Alianza Dominicana’s CREO program. Diana offers a wealth of information and experiences, as well as support to the Year Up students and staff.

Randy Moore
Business Communications Instructor
Randy joins the Year Up team as a Business Communications Instructor. Before coming to Year Up, Randy worked as the Operations & Communications Manager for Computers for Youth-NYC and was responsible for ensuring more than 2,200 low-income families in NYC received free refurbished computers, technical training and bilingual technical support for their systems. Randy was also responsible for the creation of internal/external documents and procedures regarding Computers for Youth's program. Prior to his tenure at CFY, Randy worked as a 10th-12th grade English/Writing Teacher at Miami Jackson High School in inner-city Miami. He received his BA degree in Communications/Public Relations from Wilberforce University in Wilberforce, Ohio and is currently working to obtain his MS in Bilingual Education from Adelphi University.

Vivian joins Year Up with ten years of experience teaching and training in the field of technical administration and support. Prior to joining Year Up, she worked as the Manager of Administrative System Services and Acting Director of Information Technology at the DeVry Institute of Technology. Vivian holds an MS degree in Management Information Systems from the Stevens Institute of Technology.

Charmaine Peart-HoSang
Senior Director, Programs
At Year Up, Charmaine oversees multiple program areas, including Outreach, Admissions, Academics and Student Services. Charmaine has over 20 years of experience working in various forms of management, social work (administration and clinical) and workforce development work both in Canada and United States. She previously worked as the Director of the NY Youthline which specializes in providing information/referral/crisis intervention for youth, parents and service providers throughout the City. Charmaine hails from Toronto, Canada, where she earned her BS in Psychology from York University and earned her MSW in Administration and Case Work from the Hunter College School of Social Work based in New York City. She is an MSW Field Instructor to MSW interns from several universities (NYU, Columbia and Fordham). Charmaine recently earned a certificate in Not-For-Profit Management at Columbia Business School for Executive Education.

Charkie Quarcoo
Corporate Relations Manager
IIn an effort to work at an organization that aligns with her passion, Charkie comes to Year Up with experience in development and a desire to help young adults recognize their potential.
A native of Brooklyn, NY, Charkie graduated from Trinity College in 2006, with a Bachelor of Science in Psychology and Educational Studies. While at Trinity College, Charkie worked in the Development Office, serving as a student representative for development functions. Committed to helping the community around her, Charkiealso interned at family centers, working with children and young adults to help them achieve their personal and professional goals. After graduation, she moved to Boston to work at a leadership development consulting firm organizing the facilitative leadership workshops.

Daniel Rabuzzi
Senior Director, Operations & Strategy
Daniel Rabuzzi comes to Year Up from the Network for Teaching Entrepreneurship (NFTE), where he was the first-ever National Program Director and then Director for Business Development. At NFTE, Daniel managed to successful completion a wide variety of enterprise-wide projects, including: NFTE’s first three national business plan competitions, and the relationship with 50 Eggs Productions for their creation and distribution of the documentary film about NFTE students, Ten9Eight (released nationally through AMC Cinemas, BET, and PBS). Daniel was also a key member of the team that revamped and initiated NFTE’s publishing arrangements with Pearson Prentice Hall and with Scholastic Inc. Before joining NFTE, Daniel was President & CEO, Leader to Leader Institute (formerly The Peter Drucker Foundation for Nonprofit Management, NY). Other positions include: CEO of the Kentucky Virtual University (a wholly state-owned, web-based start-up serving adult learners from low-income communities), Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs and then Vice President for Economic Initiatives, Kentucky Council on Postsecondary Education (Frankfort, KY), Assistant Professor of History, Luther College (Decorah, IA) and Vice President in international ship finance at Manufacturers Hanover Trust Company (NY) and its start-up subsidiary in Oslo, Norway. Daniel has had c. 20 articles published, including the 2005 silver award winner from the Society of National Association Publications for a cover story in the American Society of Association Executives journal. He co-authored a policy paper on youth entrepreneurship education commissioned and published by the Global Education Initiative of the World Economic Forum. Daniel earned his B.A. at Harvard, an M.A. in international business at The Fletcher School (Tufts), and his Ph.D. in European history at Johns Hopkins.

Melissa
Ramirez
Admissions and Volunteer Specialist
Melissa joins Year Up NY as Admissions and Volunteer Specialist after extensive work with youth across New York City. Most recently, she worked with Astor Home for Children as a screener to identify children with social-emotional needs. She has done extensive outreach into public schools and Head Start centers in the Bronx working with principals and other school staff. In 2006-2007, she was a Public Service Scholar through Hunter College, which offered her the opportunity to explore public service at the Department of Youth and Community Development as an intern. Prior to the scholar program, she volunteered for a year in Kravis Children’s Mt. Sinai Hospital with the Child Life Program, where she helped youth to cope with their experience in the ICU. Melissa recently graduated from Hunter College with a BA in Psychology.

Sylvia Ramos
Alumni Services Coordinator
Sylvia Ramos is a graduate of Year Up NY Class 2, and received the David E. Retik Award for Excellence at graduation. She also serves as a Senator to the Year Up NY Alumni Association. During Year Up, Sylvia interned at Lehman Brothers, and was hired by Lehman when her internship ended. She worked in the Mortgage Derivatives Middle Office while attending Lehman College during the evening. When Lehman Brothers fell, Sylvia moved to STRIVE and became the Office Operations Instructor. She taught subjects such as Microsoft Office Suite and Business Communications to students aged 18 to 45. Sylvia continues her evening sutdies, majoring in Economics with a minor in Computer Information Systems. Sylvia also attended the Woodhull Institute of Ethical Leadership. Working with Year Up was something she knew she had to do even before she graduated. As an alumna, she sees it as her duty to provide other young adults with the same opportunity she was given.

Suzi Rice
LMSW Student Services Specialist
Suzi Rice joins Year Up as the Student Services Specialist. Suzi began her journey with Year Up as an MSW intern from Fordham University working with prospective and current students in admissions and student services and assisting as an Admissions Associate when her internship ended. Suzi completed her second year MSW internship at Mount Sinai's Adolescent Health Center providing individual and group counseling, initial intake assessments, and appropriate documentation to adolescents and young adults ages 10 -24. Suzi also gained experience facilitating a domestic violence group for women ages 30 - 60 while in undergrad. Suzi graduated with her BA in psychology (Magna Cum Laude) from Elon University and recently earned her Masters in Social Work (Suma Cum Laude) from Fordham Univeristy. Suzi has earned her LMSW and plans to work towards her LCSW in the future. In addition, Suzi has earned her 200-hr Yoga Certification and actively instructs individuals and groups in her spare time. Suzi has a passion for youth development and motivating young adults to realize and reach their true potential.

Margaret Rizzo
Associate Director of Operations & People Development
Margaret has extensive experience in creating, systematizing, and centralizing processes. She comes to Year Up after seven years of overseeing exams at Brooklyn Law School. At Brooklyn Law School she oversaw a team of 100+ of proctors while maintaining the highest quality of service to the faculty, administration and students. Margaret holds a BA from Fordham in Media Studies, a MA from Columbia University in Gender Ethics, and a MA from Union Theological Seminary in Social Ethics. Margaret is a freelance photographer and is the founder of a travel group for women. In her spare time she tutors public high school students from NY and the greater NY area for NY State Regents Exams, PSAT, SAT, Calculus, and Language Arts/English.

Denisse Rodriguez
Events and Donor Engagement Manager
Denisse joins the Development team of Year Up New York as the Manager of Donor Engagements and Events. Prior to her shift to the non-profit sector, Denisse was recruited into GE’s Edison Engineering Development Program where she initiated the GE Hispanic Forum for the GE Infrastructure, Billerica, MA site. Most recently, Denisse served as an Executive Assistant and Office Manager to Laborers’ Local Union 1421 in Massachusetts. As the local grew in membership and assets, Denisse responded by streamlining processes and adding capacity through an organizational operations upgrade. She also served as Events Coordinator and President of the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers – Manhattan College Chapter where she led a variety of service and professional development events. Denisse looks forward to serving Year Up New York’s Development team while adding value through strategic innovation and operations expertise. She holds a BS in Electrical Engineering from Manhattan College and recently obtained her MBA in Non-profit Management from Boston University. She is glad to be back in her home town of New York City and hopes to aid in closing the opportunity divide.

Reinette Ross
Operations Coordinator
Reinette is a graduate of Year Up NY Class 6 and received the David E. Retik Award for Excellence at graduation. Reinette proved to be a true leader and teammate while at Year Up. She interned at ING and was offered a contract extension upon graduation of the program. She is also a very active member of the Year Up NY Alumni Association. As an alumna, Reinette holds Year Up‘s mission close to her heart and feels strongly about sharing the opportunity she was given with other young adults. Working at Year Up was something she knew she could not pass up. She currently studies in the evening and hopes to earn a Bachelors of Business Administration. Reinette strives to work hard at helping Year Up NY grow while maintaining its cultural and uniqueness by providing her insight as an alum.

Director of Academics
Sid Ross has been involved in adult education as an instructor, teacher-trainer, administrator and writer. Previous to joining Year Up, he was the education manager at Grace Institute, a nonprofit job-training program for economically underserved women. Sid holds a BA in English Literature from New York University and is currently a master's candidate in the Adult Learning and Leadership Department at Teachers College, Columbia University..

Vilma Schonwetter
Associate Director of Career and Alumni Services
Vilma identifies employment and higher education opportunities for Year Up NY graduates and strengthens relations with graduates, employers, and institutions of higher education. Prior to Year Up, Vilma was a Senior Recruiter within the North America Staffing Division at Citigroup and provided staffing solutions to multiple business sectors within Citi, including Global Transaction Services Operations, Corporate and Investment Bank Operations, Private Bank Operations, Alternative Investments Operations, CitiFinancial, and Citibank. Vilma has been a major supporter of Year Up and while at Citi was responsible for managing employee-related issues, on-boarding processes, and training/development of Year Up interns. Vilma obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Technical and Professional Communications from Polytechnic Institute of NYU and her Master's of Science degree in Human Resource Management from the New School for Management and Urban Policy at New School University. Heeyoon Slater
Director, Special Projects & Finance
Heeyoon is a dedicated nonprofit professional, with over eight years of varied experience working to help organizations carry out their missions. She has been a member of the executive teams at several venerable New York City-based HIV/AIDS-related nonprofits: the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA), God’s Love We Deliver (GLWD), and the M·A·C AIDS Fund (MAF). At the CFDA, she oversaw the creation and successful launch of the organization’s official website. At GLWD, Heeyoon played an integral role in managing local, state and federal advocacy efforts, analyzing operations data, and coordinating internal and external projects. She moved to MAF with GLWD’s Executive Director to help with the transition and to evaluate, implement, and manage a new international giving program of over $10 million, annually. Heeyoon graduated magna cum laude from Amherst College and recently received her Master in Business Administration from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania.

Suttie
Lead Instructor, Business Communications
Before teaching at Year Up, Skye was as an English Instructor at Clemson University in Clemson, SC where she taught literature and writing classes. Prior to beginning her teaching career, Skye worked as a writer and editor’s assistant for a Long Island-based newspaper. In 2003, before beginning graduate school at Clemson, Skye lived in Spain and later studied in Ireland. Skye holds a Bachelor’s degree in English from SUNY Geneseo, and a Master’s degree in English Literature from Clemson University.

Wilfrid
Velazquez
Senior Site Leader
Wilfrid most recently worked as a Financial Aid/Student Services Representative with Career Blazers Learning Center in New York City. In this role, Wilfrid served as an advisor on financial and student issues for more than 250 students. Prior to this, Wilfrid worked for many years at Hispanic Young People's Alternatives (HYPA), an organization that served over a thousand participants per year in providing educational, recreational, and artistic activities to youth ages 6 through 18 years of age in Sunset Park, Brooklyn. At HYPA, Wilfrid served in many different capacities from their Performing Arts Director, Assistant Beacon Site Director, and finally as the Office Manager to the HYPA Main Office. In late 2007, Wilfrid completed the United Way Junior Fellows Program. The United Way Junior Fellows Program is an intensive management program for non-for-profit professionals. Wilfrid plans to graduate from Brooklyn College in the fall of 2010. He is very thrilled to be a part of Year Up NY.

Janelle
Viruet
Associate Director of Internships
Janelle Viruet joined Year Up as the Partner Relations Manager with extensive experience in human resources administration and has advised, interviewed hundreds of jobseekers throughout her career. Recently Janelle transitioned to be the Associate Director of Internships. She has worked at Cabrini Medical Center and most recently with Town Sports International managing benefits programs for hundreds of employees and working with corporate vendors on a daily basis. Janelle earned her B.A. in Psychology from Long Island University and her M.S. in Counseling from Pace University. She has also earned 31 credits towards a doctorate degree in Clinical Psychology.

Malik
Williams
Business Communications Fellow
Malik joins Year Up NY as a Business Communications Fellow. Prior to Year Up, he worked at Saint Joseph's University as a tutor in the writing lab and also worked in the entertainment marketing sector. After being involved with and inspired by Year Up through a volunteer assignment, Malik decided to shift gears and accept a full time position. Malik attended the University of Massachusetts at Amherst and will be completing his education in NY.

Sara Wilson
FAO Schwarz Family Foundation Fellow, Corporate Engagement
Sara Wilson earned her Bachelor’s degree from Syracuse University in Political Science and Public health. She has worked with the Mayor’s Office in the Bureau of Planning & Sustainability and the Lead Abatement Program in Syracuse; pioneered with the first national site of the Say Yes to Education/ Partnership for Better Education program, worked in the Massachusetts office of Common Cause and Boston University School of Public Health. Sara has been a participant in various organizations that foster personal and professional development; she is also an Alumna of the Louis August Jonas Foundation (international leadership program) as well as an affiliate of the NYU Black Nurses Student Association.

Ken Wright
IT Instructor
Ken brings with him 10 years of experience teaching information technology in technical schools and community organizations. The latest position involved being a systems administrator for several New York City major hospitals. He served as Director of Internal IT forums and coordinator of technology presentations. He also brings with him well rounded experience in the IT field from many environments throughout the technology spectrum. He has for the past 10 years been actively involved as a mentor and advice counselor for adults and youth throughout the community. He also delivers constructive, goal oriented and inspirational speeches regularly to various community groups.
