OUR STUDENTS
Year Up’s success is a direct result of the success of our students. Representing 18-24 year-olds in Boston, New York City, Providence and Washington D.C., our students are proving that, given the opportunity, they have the motivation and determination to succeed in professional careers and higher education.

Year Up actively recruits students from urban high schools, as well as community-based organizations in the cities we serve. Our classes consist of very diverse groups of students, who have demonstrated a common interest in pursuing careers in technology and the motivation in improving their lives. Previous job experiences for our students have typically been in minimum wage-earning jobs.

STUDENT success stories

Wilson Correa
Class of 2003
Now a Computer Technician at Partners HealthCare

Before attending Year Up, I was a completely different person from who I am now. I didn't have the necessary professional and technical skills to work in a corporate environment and my English skills were very poor. My biggest concern was what I was going to do with my future.

My experience at Year Up made an enormous impact on my life. I know have the skills to work at a great company and am able to speak English fluently. More importantly, I have clear goals for my future. I want to keep growing in my career and become the first member of my family to earn a college degree.

Bryan Holston
Class of 2006
Now a Deskside Support Technician at Perot Systems

I was born and raised, along with my two brothers, in the Washington Park area of Providence, Rhode Island by my mother. I earned my GED when I was 18 years old and started working in the moving business. A relative soon told me about the Year Up and convinced me to apply. When I learned more about the program, I thought it was too good to be true! At Year Up I learned as much as I could about IT. I overcame my fear of public speaking; I learned what it meant to be responsible; and I began communicating my thoughts more clearly and effectively. My apprenticeship at Perot was a motivating experience and I am grateful for the opportunity to work and learn from such a talented team. I am now building upon my skills and plan to expand my passion for IT by hopefully managing my own IT team of professionals some day and, with any luck, a software development company.

Sherley Torres
Class of 2004
Now a National Platform Support Agent at Bank of America

Before I came to Year Up, I didn’t think I was going to have much of a future. I had two kids and believed that I didn’t have the freedom to develop a career. I was constantly asking myself – how can I give my kids a better life when it took so much energy and time to be a good mother?

Attending Year Up made me realize that everything is possible – that once I set a goal for myself, I can achieve it. I learned that I can have a successful career and follow my dreams, as well as be a mom. I just needed the proper technical training and someone to help me recognize my own potential. My goal now is to be a role model for other young women, to show them what Year Up taught me – that you can have a successful life and reach your potential.

"I have traveled a long way, from a person who lacked confidence, to a person who knows she has something of value to offer. From a person who did not know what she wanted in life to a person who is directed toward success and is willing to work hard to get it."
